Chapter 1 the study of the person. Personality psychology addresses how people think, feel and behave: 3 parts of psychological triad, inconsistencies between feelings, thoughts and behaviours are common enough to make us suspect that the mind is not a simple place. Personality psychology draws heavily from social, cognitive, developmental, clinical and biological psychology (contributes to each of these subfields as well) Personality refers to an individual"s characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behaviour together with the psychological mechanisms. Cannot understand everything about a person at once, must limit yourself to certain kinds of observations, certain kinds of patterns, certain ways of thinking about these patterns. Personality psychology is organized around several different basic approaches: trait approach. Focus on the ways that people differ psychologically and how these differences might be conceptualized and measured. Understand the mind in terms of the body. Address biological mechanisms such as anatomy, physiology: biological approach genetics, evolution, psychoanalytic approach.
