Social psychology compared with sociology: social psychology is a branch of psychology, rooted in the study of individuals, with an emphasis on the psychological processes going on in their hearts and minds. Provides general laws and theories about societies, not individuals. Studies the psychological processes people have in common with one another that make them susceptible to social influence. Studies the characteristics that make individuals unique and different from one another. We also need to understand how a person might understand/interpret the situation he/she is in: this emphasis on the construal (the way people interpret the social situation) is rooted in. It is precisely when these two motives tug an individual in the opposite directions that we can gain out most valuable insight into the workings of the human heart and mind. Suffering and self-justification: our desire to maintain self-esteem can have surprising consequences.
