PSYCH 2C03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Dime (United States Coin), Dacher Keltner, Social Exchange Theory
Document Summary
Prosocial behaviour any act performed with the goal of benefiting another person. Sometimes people act in a prosocial manner out of self-interest hoping to get something in return. Altruism the desire to help another person or group of people, even if it involves a cost to the help. The degree of genetic relatedness did not predict willingness to help. Instead participants were most likely to help those who they were emotionally tied to. Evolutionary psychologists believe that people help others because of three factors that have become ingrained in our genes: kin selection, the norm of reciprocity, the ability to learn and follow social norms. Learning social norms it is highly adaptive for individuals to learn social norms from other members of a society. Social exchange: the costs and rewards of helping. Altruistic behaviour can be based on self-interest. Empathy and altruism: the pure motive for helping.
