From working memory to long term memory entering long term storage: the need for engagement. With regard to primacy effect, the more an item is rehearsed, the more likely you are to remember it later o two types of rehearsal: maintenance rehearsal. People focus on the to-be-remembered items themselves. Incidental learning, intentional learning and depth of processing. Intentional learning: learning that is deliberate, have an expectation that memory will be tested later on. Incidental learning: learning in the absence of any intention to learn. Studies with different conditions show that intention to learn doesn"t add very much: memory can be just as good without this intention, provided that you approach the materials in the right way. Intention doesn"t do much: memory performance roughly same in conditions with shallow processing whether with or without intention to learn. It is the approach* to learning that matters most. No overall difference between genders in memory accuracy or quantity of info retained.
