Sir francis galton: observed that talent in some fields can run in families- deliberate practice: highly structured practice with the explicit goal of improving performance, involves tasks designed to address weaknesses / correct errors. Different from mere repetition" (repeating the same actions: repetition sufficient to improve in early stages of skill learning but stops at higher levels. Interleaved vs. blocked practice style: interleaved: alternating between pieces frequently within a practice session, more effective, less likely to fall into thoughtless repetition, blocked: focusing on one piece at a time. Ericsson: said that one"s genetic blueprint does not determine the upper limit of success, but establishes the building blocks for success that can be realized through training. Critics of ericsson say that his emphasis on deliberate practice underestimates the role of other factors that contribute to / mediate the effects of deliberate practice including: genetic influences, starting age of training, intelligence, personality.
