The brain and spinal cord are supported and protected from injury and infection in four ways: encasing. The brain is encased in a thick bone the skull. The spinal cord is encased in an interlocking boney vertebrae. Cns lies within boney encasement; the sns and ans lies outside. Therefore, pns are more vulnerable, but can renew themselves after injury by growing new axons and dendrites. Cns has more limited ability to self-repair: meninges.
