When our basic needs for love, affection, and belongingness are not met, we feel lonely and worthless. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, self-actualization. Much of positive psychology of social connection began with exploration of traumatic separation and failed relationships. In order to maintain a flourishing relationship, attachment, love, and purposeful positive relationship behaviours must be present. Personal-growing relationships: relationships that promote optimal functioning of both participants. Attachment begins within the first few moments of life. Maladaptive parental behaviours: chaotic, unplanned attempts to meet a child"s needs, lack of physical availability, inconsistent. Adaptive parental behaviours: responsiveness to a child"s behavioural cues, e. g. smiling), consistent. Attachment system: regulates the proximity-seeking behaviours connecting infants and caregivers in physical and emotional space: two-way connection, function: protection and emotional security. Insecure attachment is a precursor to difficulty with: cooperating with others, regulating moods, forming stable relationships.
