Social scientists find charisma a complex and mysterious phenomenon that defies ready description and clear definition. But few people in our culture lack a popular conception of charismatic leadership. Religious leaders are often seen as charismatic and charismatic author- ity is commonly cited by scholars as a defining feature of cults or new religious movements in particular. As stated, most theories turn to some conception of unconscious need satisfaction and the processes of projection and identification for an answer.
