Some ways of looking at deviance are quite abstract. Based on different assumptions and each yield different conclusions. Action not conforming to groups values, defined by the reaction of others. Act that contravenes a law, censured by authorities and subject to formal sanction. The sociological study of deviance focusing on its intersubjective definition. Behaviour that is in accordance with social norms because of either agreement with social values or fear of sanctions. Deviance is not a single problem with a single solution. Deviance can be seen as a political phenomenon. Connected with the exercise of power and application of rules. Deviance can light the way toward the practical management of social pathology. The study of deviance provides us with useful knowledge which can then be applied to the formation of policy. Disruptive action that inflicted pain and subverted trust and community. The animal kingdom rule: to eat or to be eaten in the human kingdom: define or to be defined.
