Chapter 7 the social psychology of deviance. Deviance: thoughts, feelings, or behaviours that depart from accepted practices in a society or group. Mores: widely held beliefs in society, with many so widely held that they are formalized into law. Folkways: rules of behaviour and custom passed down through a group or society. Assumes inds decide to maintain or break social norms and standards during every interaction. Views deviance as a manifestation of social interactions. When an ind decides to deviate from norms of a group, they will likely incur penalties for making the decision. Ethnomethodology: a theory designed to link individual-level interactions with broader society. Ethnomethodology emphasizes how individuals construct and defend their views of social reality. Different boundaries regarding acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. Reflexivity: process by which individuals think about a behaviour within its social context and give meaning to it.
