Economic determinism: the economy determines all aspects of society: rejected by neo-marxists, too reductionistic- ignores individual thought and action, contradicts the dialectic. Focus on the dialectic between objective and subjective aspects of social life: georg lukacs, reification. False consciousness: precedes class consciousness, unawareness of true class interests: only social elites could produce ideas to start a revolution, rejected marxists whose ideas are deterministic, fatalistic and mechanistic , hegemony, cultural leadership exercised by the ruling class. Frankfurt school: major critiques of social and intellectual life, criticisms of marxian theory, economic determinism, criticisms of positivism, does not advocate for social change. Sees physical science as the basis for all knowledge: criticisms of sociology. Scientism - making the scientific method an end in itself: accepts the status quo, criticisms of modern society, cultural repression of the individual in modern society. Perpetuated through modern technology: tech. could however be used to develop a better society.
