The first reading tries to explain the current paradox found between individuals" ideas, values and behaviour of marriage and love using theoretical perspectives given by anthony. Giddens" transformation of intimacy is explained as relationships presently taking a more egalitarian stance and maintained with the satisfaction of both partners instead of the previous till death do us part love model that followed traditional gender roles. Cherlin"s deinstitutionalization of marriage sees the influence of social norms weakening with the greater freedom individuals have with marriage, divorce, remarriage and the legalization of same-sex marriage. Both of giddens" and cherlin"s ideas are challenged and further supported with additional works in this paper. Although i can see some truth to both theories, i would have to agree with some of the criticism presented regarding giddens" theory overlooking an intersectional feminist lens and the feminist research done on marriage gender roles.
