Important developments: the arrival of the pill coincided with freedom movements, the proportion of employed women doubled. Married with young children: common law relationships increasingly received legal recognition both federally and provincially, resulting in such couples receiving the same tax and benefit treatment as their legally married counterparts, divorce laws were liberalized. Physical separation of one year or more: federal legislation lifted the ban on the availability of legal abortion when a (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374)"s health (cid:449)as e(cid:374)da(cid:374)gered, legalization of contraception and homosexuality, legalizing same-sex marriage. The net result of these diverse developments is that, when it comes to sex and marriage, the emerging millennials have what seem like unlimited options. The (cid:373)ille(cid:374)(cid:374)ial ge(cid:374)eratio(cid:374)"s respo(cid:374)se: sex, abortion, cohabitation. One would assume religious values are a factor in both disapproval and non- a(cid:272)(cid:272)epta(cid:374)(cid:272)e of u(cid:374)(cid:373)arried people (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g pare(cid:374)ts. Ho(cid:449)e(cid:448)er, it"s (cid:272)lear that (cid:374)atio(cid:374)al background also plays an important independent role.
