Clst 102 reading chapter 1, 1-16: an outline history of athens to the death of alexander the great. First incident in political history of athens we can access is in 640. About one-time olympic victor, kylon, attempting and failing a coup during a major religious festival. He escaped, but followers were killed and their descendants were cursed. Know about this thanks to herodotos and thucydides. They explained the curse in writing in 5 th century. Herodotos (from halikarnassos) narrated wars against persia of 490 and 480-479. Thucydides (from athens) narrated the pentekontaetia, the fifty years" from the persian wars to the outbreak of the peloponnesian war" between athens and sparte and the war itself. Xenophon starts writing where thucydides ended in 410. Wrote about war and of the political upheaval in athens after end of war in 404. To find out what happened before fifth century, have to piece together a story from accounts handed down after the fifth century.
