EPID 301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Exponential Function, Cumulative Incidence, Time Point
Document Summary
Chapter 3: basic measures based on frequencies and rates: parameter families. Epidemiology has 2 basic parameter (cid:281)families(cid:282) prevalence and incidence (focus on the frequency or rate of single variables) Point prevalence, period prevalence, and lifetime prevalence. In descriptive epidemiology, prevalence proportion is the basic parameter (not as sample-based estimate of prevalence, nor as the actual prevalence of a disease in an entire population- prevalance) In some unusual situations, this parameter can be a count rather than a proportion- in these situations, you would call the parameter a prevalence count. **point prevalence quantifies the amount of disease in a population at point in time. Usually assume that the term (cid:281)prevalence(cid:282) refers to point prevalence. Period prevalence: proportion of a population that has, or has had, a disease at any time during a defined time interval, such as 1 year or 1 month.
