COMM 251 Chapter 5: COMM251.Chapter 5.Chapter6.docx
Document Summary
Motivation: the forces within a person that affect his or her direction, intensity, and persistence of voluntary behaviour: one of four essential drivers of individual behaviour and performance. Regardless, challenge is that most employees aren"t very engaged: canada: 20% engaged; 60% somewhat engaged; 20% either low engagement or actively disengaged (tend to be disruptive at work) Needs: goal-directed forces that people experience: needs = motivational forces of emotions channeled towards particular goals to correct deficiencies or imbalances. Drives express themselves directly in background emotions and we eventually become aware of their existence by means of background feelings . The individual"s self-concept, social norms, and past experience amplify or suppress drive-based emotions, thereby resulting in stronger or weaker needs: individual differences also explain why needs can be learned to some extent. Socialization and reinforcement may cause people to alter their self- concept somewhat -> resulting in stronger/weaker need for social interaction, achievement, etc.
