Francesco petrarca humanist poet and scholar, served cardinal colonna: father of humanism shows mutual attraction of ascetic and secular values so. Petrarch characteristic of modern man: works show feelings about love and his attitude toward the corruption in the church. Another: trying to avoid the exertion of the ascent; but no human ingenuity can alter the nature of things. Not so readily perceived by men: motions of the body are obvious and external. Those of the soul are invisible and hidden. Must ascend to top goal which we are bound. Immortal soul can reach goal in twinkling of an eye. Ovid: wish little, must long with the upmost eagerness to gain our end . Gaze on future thou shouldst prolong this uncertain life of thine for yet two lustres, make advance toward virtue proportionate to original distance which thou hast departed.
