HIST 122 Chapter Notes - Chapter 56-59: Evangelicalism, Egalitarianism
Document Summary
Disappearance of slavery, plantation slavery in americas was the most surprising episode of the 19th century. Almost all preindustrial societies considered slavery to be a norm. 19th century science produced new justi cations for slavery. According to schemes, black people were more like apes than europeans. Slavery repelled believers in the 3 doctrines of growing appeal int he world: Egalitarians: all are equal so it doesn"t make sense for someone to be born into slavery. Economic liberals (and those who believe in free trade): slavery was irrational b/ c people work better when they do it freely and for wages. The free-trade doctrine didn"t seem to be borne out in reality rather the world economy relied on compulsion to work. In africa, slaves were a vital labour force and a major export product. In the tropical & sub-tropical latitudes of the atlantic-side new world, slavery was the only labour force available.
