Modern scientists have a tremendous amount of independence in how they distribute and use their funds. Governments, which provide most funding for scientific research, allocate funds to scientists and then allow the scientists themselves to decide what money goes to which projects. Key to scientist"s privilege is their claim to have almost exclusive ability to judge the merit of their work. When it comes to science, being a critic takes too much expertise for most people. For most scientists, research is the main goal, and rewards in the form of recognition by their peers as opposed to in the form of money and power.
