40 views2 pages
Exhalation
Exhalation may be passive or active
Passive exhalation: relaxation of muscles of
inspiration & elastic recoil of the lungs allows
the chest cavity to decrease in volume. This
reverses the pressure differential in inhalation
Active exhalation: the internal intercostal
muscles & abdominal muscles - forcibly
decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity;
pushing air out
Spirometer: used to measure lung capacities
and volumes
Total lung capacity: maximum volume of air
in the lungs when one inhales completely
Usually around 6-7 liters
Residual volume (RV): minimum volume of
air in the lungs when one exhales completely
