PHGY 350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Substantia Gelatinosa Of Rolando, Dorsal Root Ganglion, Posterior Grey Column
Document Summary
Somatic pain : originates from skin (cutaneous) or from deeper structures (bone/ muscle) Visceral pain: originates in organs - travels by sympathetic fibers. There are two different afferent fibres that conduct pain impulses. A delta fibers: transmit acute pain - the sudden, sharp, localized pain due to thermal and physical stimuli. Unmyelinated c fibers: chronic pain, experienced as a diffuse, dull, burning/ aching feeling. C fibers receive the thermal, chemical, & physical stimuli from : muscle, tendons, myocardium, skin, digestive tract. Peripheral nerves : afferent pain impulse dorsal root ganglia spinal cord (via dorsal horn/ substantia gelatinosa) Spinal cord synapse: reflex response: efferent (or motor) impulse back to the muscles involuntary muscle contraction to move the body away from pain source. Mild pain: acetaminophen (tylenol) - popular, because fewer side effects. Nsaids such as ibuprofen and naproxen treat acute+chronic pain esp when inflammation is present. These drugs have antipyretic action (lower body temp.
