Question of obedience and coercion: coerce: deprive man of their freedom. Negative" sense freedom or liberty: what is the area within which the subject (person) can or should be able to do without the interference of others. Economic freedom or slavery man too poor to afford something but lacks freedom since he is not able to attain it inability to get what one wants because not able to pay is coercion or slavery. The wider the area of non-interference the wider my freedom: cannot be unlimited because then all men could interfere with one another. Natural" freedom would lead to social chaos, men"s minimum needs would not be satisfied. Constant and tocqueville: need a minimum area of personal freedom which cannot be violated: if abused, individual would not be able to minimally develop natural facilities. Liberty of some must depend on the restraint of others.
