Stage 1 lasts 10 minutes, first falling asleep: theta waves (decreased frequency) Stage 2 next 10-20 minutes, falling more asleep: irregular eeg and sleep spindles, kcomplex. Stage 3 falling into deeper sleep: slow-wave sleep (short transition): delta waves. Stage 4 15-30minutes, deepest sleep: less than 50% delta waves less time as night progresses. Rem-10-20 minutes, increased heart rate, breathing and brain activity, dream stage, increased time in this stage as night progresses, eyes move and hands may twitch but otherwise muscle paralysation.
