Document Summary
Explain how sensation and perception are the same, and how they are different. Perception and sensation are different as perception refers to the understanding and organization of stimuli whereas sensation is the reception of sensory stimuli from the world. They are same because they are both involved in our understanding of the world. Compare structuralist, gestalt, and constructivist (knowledge-based accounts) of perception. Structuralist account says that we take in each piece of the world in sensation to build a wall of perception. In contrast gestalt says that our whole perception is more than the sum of our sensations: based upon principles such as contours, closure, synchrony etc. Constructivist account is the idea that we actively are involved in the interpretation of data rather than simply passively receiving with no reaction of involvement. Describe the gestalt principles contributing to visual perception. Continuity despite an object blocking another one our brain still insists on seeing the whole object.
