Chapter 3 (cognitive level of analysis) key terms: Cognitive process: the process of thinking or knowing information. Mental representation: images, words and concepts (different experiences = different mental representations, e. g what a girl can and cannot do) Perception: it is the cognitive process that interprets and organizes information from the senses to produce some meaningful experience of the world. Schema: can be defined as networks of knowledge, beliefs and expectations about particular aspects of the world. In other words, they are mental representations of knowledge. Distortions: when brain fills in the blanks based on existing schemas, or it simply invents something that seems to fit in which can result in mistakes. Encoding: transforming sensory information into a meaningful memory. Storage: creating a biological trace of the encoded information in memory, which is either consolidated or lost. Rehearsal: it simply means keeping material active in memory by repeating it until it can be stored.
