Document Summary
After working through this lesson"s material, you should be able to: Explain how the structure of the nervous system determines behaviour. Compare and contrast the divisions of the nervous system (cns vs. pns, etc. ) Describe the different cells in the cns (afferent and efferent neurons, glia) and their functions. Describe the spinal reflex arc and its function. Explain how the structural and functional features of neurons allow them to process and transmit information. Describe the structure of the neuron (dendrites, cell body, axon, axon terminal) Describe a synapse and the effects of synaptic transmission. Describe the ways in which drugs can alter synaptic transmission. Describe the neurotransmitters (amines, amino acids and peptides, and members of these families) and their functional roles. Spinal cord communicates with all the sensory organs and muscles, except those of the head. Serve supportive and productive functions and help the neurons do work. Essentially the plumbing that is necessary for the brain"s functioning.
