Identify and define the three components of memory. Explain the effects of different levels of processing and types of elaboration on encoding. Method of loci: method of memory enhancement that uses visual information to organize and recall information. Items are remembered based on association with specific locations and a mental walk is established, moving from one memory/location to the next; example of encoding. Way of remembering series of items by: memorizing location, establishing walk ; sequence through that location, placing elements needing to be remembered in each spot along walk. Ebbinghaus studied creation and loss of memory is controlled manner; used lists of words and use of nonsense sounds in new memories. Construction: creation of new story from an original story. Elaboration: degree to which information is specified, described, and/or related to other information in memory. Schema: mental framework (body of knowledge) that organizes and synthesizes information about a person, place, or thing.
