Social environments play a significant role in how individuals develop. Models: people who can be observed and from whom individuals can learn to behave appropriately/inappropriately. Early life is when parents and caregivers dominate infants social world, as we age our social sphere becomes larger. Social animals aren"t only in a struggle with their environment to survive, but compete but interpersonal attention and resources. In every generation in a social species, the individuals with the greatest ability to outsmart their competitors will be most likely to survive and mate. Inductive discipline: guiding behaviors, introducing appropriate limits, and setting up reasonable consequences while also explaining why. Authoritarian: highly demanding of children, inflexible about deviations from expected behaviors, and less responsive to children"s needs. Tend to discipline using threats/punishment and more likely to use physical discipline. Permissive: place few demands but are highly responsive to them. Believe children learn best on their own, without structure imposed by adults.
