Document Summary

Chapter 16: lifestyle, stress, and health: 510-526. Cultural evolution: the adaptive change of a culture to recurrent environmental pressures. Mainly driven by psychological forces; cultural evolution product of human intellect and physical capacity, both of which have strong genetic components. Cultures face problems for which solutions are proposed, solutions passed through generations and modified to increase effectiveness. Primary agent in shaping lifestyle: the aggregate behaviour of a person; the way in which a person leads his or her life. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviours/choices can be acquired and maintained by biological and psychological factors. Unhealthy behaviours have reinforcing consequences in the short run and damaging consequences in the long run; maintained because of the enjoy now, suffer later thinking. Problems with physical survival no longer the main stressors, but our physiology has not changed; thus, we deal with psychological stressors as though they were physical.
