Identify measures used in literature on similar subject. Develop new measures by modifying old ones or creating new use for an old one. Develop measures out of the process of refining the constructs of interest in the study. Identify observational definitions: define the constructs to be used in the study as precisely as possible. Part of any study design involves deciding which behaviours will adequately reflect the constructs of interest, which are not directly observable. Turn a phenomena into a manageable experiment by carefully defining the constructs in terms of measurable behaviours operationalize phenomena into specific behaviours. Habituation: a gradual decrease in responding to repeated stimuli. Measure amount of time baby spends looking at diff stimuli. Habituation process: show baby same stimulus repeatedly and change to new stimulus. Preferential looking: infants prefer to look @ new events. So if they look @ same stimulus they will get bored and look away.
