PSYC 235 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Internal Validity, Confounding, Human Genome Project
Document Summary
Basic components of a research study: hypothesis: an educated guess about what you expect to find. Confounding variable: a variable (other than the independent variable) that affects the dependent variable. Control group: a group similar to the experimental group except they are not exposed to the independent variable. Randomization: process of assigning people to different research groups so that each person has an equal chance of being in the group. Analogue models: create controlled conditions of the laboratory aspects that are comparable to the phenomena under study. Generalizability: the extent to which results apply to everyone with a particular disorder. Statistical: a mathematical calculation about the difference between two groups. Clinical: whether or not the difference was meaningful. Effect size: the size of the differences which can determine whether something is significant or not. Patient uniformity myth: labelled by kiesler as the tendency to see all participants as a homogenous group.
