Perception: process of integrating and interpreting the patterns of sensations. Difference between these 2 explains why dr. p mistook his wife for a hat; had visual perception problems in absence of visual sensations. He knew there was something in his visual field but could not recognize it. Sensory systems are characterized by: parallel organization (sensory info flows between structures simultaneously, functionally segregated (different parts specialize in different kinds of analysis, hierarchical organization (info flows through brain structures of increasing neuroanatomical and functional complexity) Binding problem explains how brain combines integrated sensations as integrated wholes/perceptions. Claustrum is an area that is the potential location for binding of sensory information; underneath the neocortex. Ability to identify taste and smell depends on color to some degree b/c might aid identification of that taste b/c provides different signals. Defined as the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.
