Each molecule absorbs some radiation therefore only unabsorbed reach the plate therefore useful for characterizing internal structures that differ from surroundings that absorb x-ray. Carries little information about structures through which the beam has passed: contrast x-ray techniques. Injecting into one compartment of the body of substance that absorbs x-ray either less or more than the surrounding tissues. Injected substance heightens contrast between compartment and surroundings. Cerebral angiography is a contrast technique that uses infusion of radio-opaque dye into cerebral artery to visualize circulatory system.
