Preference for novelty as an indication of memory: bulk of research assessing infant memory used variants of habituation/dishabituation paradigm. In addition to mobile task, developed train task, which uses same logic but is appropriate to use with older babies. Deferred imitation as a measure of memory: deferred imitation refers to imitating model after significant delay. In most experiments, infants watch as experimenter demonstrates some novel behaviour with unfamiliar object, given object at later time. Information is not stored for long-term retention before about 2 years: seems unlikely due to research with deferred imitation procedure. Role of parents in teaching children to remember: parents teach children how to remember, esp. mothers, when they spend a good deal of time reminiscing about the past with children. Individual differences in how this is done are related to how well children remember past events.
