Document Summary

Describe the structure of the gastrointestinal tract and gut wall. Describe the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract. The digestive system provides two major functions: digestion and absorption. Most food must be digested in order for the nutrients it contains to be absorbed into the body. For example, a slice of whole-wheat bread does not travel through the digestive system intact. First it is broken apart, releasing its carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Most of the carbohydrate is digested to sugars, the protein to amino acids, and the fat to fatty acids. Sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids can be absorbed. The fibre from the bread is carbohydrate that cannot be digested and therefore is not absorbed into the body. Fibre and other unabsorbed substances pass through the digestive tract and are excreted in the feces. The main part of the digestive system is the gastrointestinal tract.
