PCS 120 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Projectile Motion, Rotation Around A Fixed Axis, Circular Motion

149 views4 pages
1.1 Motion Diagrams
-Motion: the hage of a ojet’s positio ith tie
-Trajectory: the path along which the object moves
Four basic types of motion
Translational Motion: linear, circular, projectile in which the object moves through space
-Linear motion not necessarily 1-dimensional
-Circular motion motion around the a centre
-Projectile motion curved linear motion
Rotational Motion: hange of the ojet’s angular position
-Rotational motion rotates on its own axis
Motion Diagram: oposite photo shoig a ojet’s positio at seeal eually spaed istats of
time
-An object that has a single position in a motion diagram is at rest
-Images that are equally spaced indicate an object moving with constant speed
-An object with images that have increasing distance between them is speeding up
-An object with images that have decreasing distance between them is slowing down
-A more complex motion shows aspects of both slowing down and speeding up (ie: throwing a ball from
center court)
1.2 The Particle Model
-Particle: an object that can be represented as a mass at a single point in space
has no size, shape, or distinction between top/bottom, front/back
-We can represent objects as a simple dot if we treat them as a particle
-The particle model of motion is a simplification in which we treat a moving object as if all of its mass
were concentrated at a single point
Not all motions can be reduced to the motion of a single point
1.3 Position and Time
To describe motion, we need to know:
Where the object is: coordinate system, position, displacement, distance
