The red scare and mccarthyism: huac and hollywood. Congress interrogated figures in the industry and claims that most of them are agents of the soviet union (communists) Purpose: to expose those individuals suspected of participating in communist affairs. Those individuals who refused the committee is told to blacklist from the hollywood since they could be part of the communist party. Group of writers and film makers were jailed on charge of contempt to congress, Hollywood came to their side but eventually backed off thus, everyone in hollywood is blacklisted. Due to controversial films, motion picture production code (1930) known as hays code adapted. Catholic leader had to meet his approval of every script before production begins. Hays code decline thus new rating applied: g, pg, pg-13, r and nc-17. Celebrities became advocates in political movements: organizations and candidates benefited from their financial and persuasive abilities. Problem they all face: woo the public and adjust to changes in style and taste.
