Document Summary
The place of definitions in critical thinking: when deciding to accept/believe a statement, one must fully understand what it means. The assertion test: proposition-something that is true or false, that can be believed or denied, that one can know to be true, or that one can imagine, wonder or consider being true. Constructing and evaluating definitions: to define something is just to make it clear, to distinguish it from other things which it may be easily confused. Too broad when it leaves out a necessary condition. Too narrow when it includes an unnecessary condition -a defi(cid:374)itio(cid:374)"s sloga(cid:374) should state (cid:272)o(cid:374)ditio(cid:374)s that are individually necessary and jointly sufficient -something can be necessary without be sufficient, something can be sufficient and yet not necessary: elaborate. Expand on the slogan by filling in details and saying how the concepts used in the slogan are related to one another: examples.
