SOC 202 Chapter 8: Week 8 Readings
Document Summary
Openly gay queens have found a comfortable, if sometimes controversial, spot on television. Glee and modern family still provide some of the same mon mots and stereotypical gesturing as their predecessors, but they"re unapologetic, regularly electing respect from other characters. Reality tv developed within, and in response to, the decline of the mass-audience broadcast networks and the rise of cable channels targeting narrower audience segments. It also bypassed many of the costs associated with scripted shows such as actors, writers and unions. They have offered new opportunities for alternatives to conventional advertising revenue, welcoming place for gays and lesbians. Shows like queer eye for the straight guy shows dual casting to target woman and gay men simultaneously, while also promoting products, consumption, and class striving. Style shows proved useful for dual casting and the link between gay men and aesthetic professions. Ex: project runaway, what not to wear.
