Smaller archaeological sites tend to be deeply buried under water table. Large sites partly buried w/ lower parts below water table. Finding sites difficult but not as much of a problem along ancient dry river courses. Periods long, chronological detail poor except w/in certain sites although improving rapidly. Early harappan (early indus) period: 3500-2500 bc. Earliest occupations apparently temporary, of mobile ppl. Earliest domesticates appear to be wheat, barley, sheep, goats, cattle. Mud-brick architecture appears shortly after 4500 bc. Copper appears along w/ wheel-made pottery, as early as 4200 bc. One of better known chronologies comes from the site of mehrgarh.
