Archaeology theory: consists of the ideas archaeologists have developed about the past and about the ways we come to know it: 2. 1 origins of archaeology (page 34) The earliest evidence of conscious recognition of ancient objects comes from the early state societies of mesopotamia, egypt, and china. The first clear evidence for the use of excavation to recover and explore the past was in renaissance. Johannes sambucus provides the earliest depiction of excavation for antiquities. The interest of renaissance antiquarians was drawn to greek and roman antiquities and to questions about the origins of celts. By the 18th century, there was increasing sophistication among european antiquarians in the way they drew monuments and documented and collected artifacts. Until the 19th century, antiquarians struggled with a number of interrelated problems. The most striking problem was the difficulty in distinguishing objects of human manufacture from objects created by natural processes.
