BPK 140 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Tap Water, Public Water System, Volatile Organic Compound
Document Summary
Indigenous cultures have cultural and spiritual traditions with strong appreciation and respect for the environment. Modern human society has tended to be more alienated. Sweat is mostly water plus a small amount of sodium and other minerals. The body loses water from the skin and especially from the moist membranes of our nose, mouth, airways, and lungs. Our blood is composed of water plus red and white blood cells and small amounts of glucose, sodium and other molecules. The kidney filters the blood, returning most of the water to the blood vessels, but a portion of the water spills into the bladder and is excreted as urine. People need at least one litre of water a day to survive. Requirements are increased by heat, physical exertion, lactation, and diarrhea. Canadians each use an average of hundred more litres of water to wash dishes, wash clothes etc. Public drinking water is drawn from rivers, lakes reservoirs, springs, and wells.
