Communal & strongly ritualized form of traditional popular culture reflected highly stratified society in which leisure expressed clear distinctions b/w ranks of labourers & landowners w/ virtually no possibility for social mobility. Ir brought w/ it new culture but also new kinds of brutality. One of key preconditions for development of popular culture in contemporary form - economic system of capitalism. Dramatically altered & intensified by series of events that came to be described as ir. 1835 ban against football in streets was one minor event in succession of restrictions of communal space by state/private interests happening in conjunction w/ changes associated w/ developing capitalist economy. Among most far reaching of changes - series of enclosure acts converting common grazing land to smaller private holdings to make land more economically productive. Practice affected popular culture in direct ways by placing physical constraints on certain kinds of activity.
