Chapter 11 - going forward: critical issues in canadian policing. Many police initiatives do not include an evaluation component. Challenges to developing evidence-based practices: resistance of policymakers to new strategies, concerns among politicians that research findings may compromise political agendas, concerns about cost of new initiatives, general fear of the unknown. Historically police services lacked capacity to incorporate best practices into their operations. Ineffective programs and policies may still be in use purely because they are known . Two-days/two-nights/four-off shift schedule: administratively convenient but does not provide for effective use of patrol resources, shifting of patrol officers should be determined by analysis of demands for service. Smart policing through the use of best practices and evidence-based strategies, maximizes resources to increase effectiveness and efficiency of police policies and operations. Absence of structures and process to facilitate funding, collaboration, and dissemination of research findings. No national strategic plan to coordinate police research.
