Canadian courts now play central role in deciding how law should deal w/o such intractable issues as. Legitimacy of laws restricting pornography & hate propaganda. Treatment accorded minorities such as gays & lesbians. Charter has unquestionably had profound impact upon role of judiciary. Courts now empowered to deal w/ issues ranging far beyond what was seen as appropriate to judicial function before 1982. In pre-1982 era, to most canadians scc was remote institutions w/ little, if any real impact upon their lives. Since entrenchment, scc has been recognized by canadian public as seat of great power & influence.
