Forensic science - in broadest definition, application of science to law. As society has grown more complex, has become more dependent on rules of law to regulate activities of members. Forensic science applies to knowledge & technology of science to definition & enforcement of such laws. Each year, as gov finds it increasingly necessary to regulate activities most intimately influencing our daily lives, science merges more closely w/ civil & criminal law. Laws continually being broadened & revised to counter alarming increase in crime rates. In response to public concern, law enforcement agencies have expanded their patrol & investigative functions, hoping to step rising tide of crime. At the same time, they are looking more to scientific community for advice & technical support for their efforts. Science cannot offer final & authoritative solutions to problems stemming from maze of social & psychological factors. However, science occupies important & unique role in cjs.
