Option a: freshwater issues and conflicts: the water system. Examine the inputs, outputs, and transfers of the hydrological cycle. Discuss the causes and consequences of the changing balance between water stored in oceans and ice. Explain the concept of maximum sustainable yield of freshwater in terms of a balance between inputs and outputs. Examine the functioning of a drainage basin as an open system with inputs, outputs, transfers, stores and feedback loops. Transfers: overland flow, floods, baseflow, recharge, percolation, capilliary rise, infiltration, stemflow, throughfall, interflow. Stores: vegetation, surface, soil moisture, groundwater, channel storage. Define stream discharge = amount of water in a stream at any given point. Examine its relationship to stream flow and channel shape. Distance from source , discharge and velocity . Laminar flow (straight) smooth, straight channel, shallow water, low non-uniform velocity allowing water to flow in sheets parallel to channel bed. Turbulent flow complex channel shape, high velocity.
