October war/yom kippur war/ramadan war (october 6th-25th) Anwar saddat wanted to reclaim the five territories captured in 1967 by force. Egyptian/syrian surprise attack was launched on yom kippur (jewish day of atonement) Israel had received intelligence about the attack several days before but decided not to act to acquire the political upper hand ---> more pity + support from international community. Israel managed to stem arab offensive after a week of fighting. Egypt and syria were soon supported by many other arab nations who began to pressure the usa into abandoning their support for israel. Israelis began to gain upper hand during second week. Arabs + soviet union vs. israel + usa. Led to soviets urgently proposing a cease-fire resolution. Eventually the un security council decided to send in a un buffer force. Israel had won but they had lost their invincible reputation ---> success for egypt.
