IAT 233 Chapter 12: Reading_12
Document Summary
Music is a composition of sounds and silence; architecture is a composition of solids and voids. For example, frank lloyd wright"s bogk residence in milwaukee (1916) is based on simple cubic forms. A building may be only simple structure enclosing space, perhaps useful for some function like a warehouse or shed or an office building. But without an organizing theme behind the structure, it is not architecture. Great architecture creates delightful environments where every detail builds upon the design theme, repeated in endless variations. Music and architecture have many things in common such as rhythm, texture, harmony, proportion, and dynamics. Rhythm in architecture also refers to the repetition elements for concept or specific design. The rhythmic elements can be used in the whole building or only in details. An obvious example is a wooden shutter, Which is used not only to satisfy the requirements of lighting. But can also use shadow to create a rhythmic feeling in space.
