PHIL 120W Chapter Notes -Jason Wu
Document Summary
Nietzsche believes that in order to achieve happiness, one must compete against and dominate others. Following this, commonly stated virtues must be changed. Virtues are character traits that benefit their possessor, so they must consist of rather selfish traits such as pride, cleverness, and ability to intimidate others. He categorizes theories into two varieties, master and slave moralities: master moralities contrast good and bad while slave moralities contrast good and evil. Since kantian and utilitarian moralities require the equal treatment of every human being, nietzsche considers them slave moralities. Nietzsche also believes that judao-christian religion is the cause for the widespread idea of impartial concern, and the slave revolt has caused us to enact slave virtues such as humility and equality. I tend to disagree with this theory from the very start.
